John Deere C650 Air Cart a better fit for growers

Available in tow-behind or tow-between versions, the C650 Air Cart has a 22,900-litre (650bu) capacity, rides on rides on high-flotation tyres and has a rapid fill rate of up to 3,500 litres (100bu) per minute

Available in tow-behind or tow-between configurations, John Deere’s C650 Air Cart is designed to suit growers seeking a mid to large size capacity and smart seeding options.

The C650 has a 22,900 litre (650bu) capacity, rides on high-flotation tyres and the tow-between model can be configured with Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF) capabilities at 3m spacing to help achieve greater production and profitability.

John Deere has introduced the C650 to fill a gap for producers wanting a greater than 20,000 litre (550bu) capacity but without having to make the jump to the 30,000 litre (850bu) C850 cart.

The C650 also has a rapid fill rate of up to 3,500 litres (100bu) per minute to help users to seed more hectares per day.

There’s also a significant amount of technology on board the C650 including a digital cart-side display to make for easy push-button filling and calibration.

In addition, the ActiveCal on-the-go feature allows operators to automatically calibrate meters from the in-cab display, while an integrated wiring harness provides connections for five camera locations, one in each tank and a fifth that provides a rear-hitch view.

The C650 also offers a liquid-capable centre tank for growers wanting to incorporate liquid fertiliser into their seeding operations. While liquid fertiliser distribution systems are not factory-installed options, they are available through the John Deere allied supplier, Liquid Systems (SA).

Input control is enhanced by the seeding accuracy provided by SectionCommand which manages seed and fertiliser application by minimising overlaps and skips.

AirPower 2 provides dual fans, one for seed and one for fertiliser, and with large, 7.6cm (3in) primaries, can accurately deliver product rates across the full width of even the widest air seeding tools, for consistent product application.

Additional features found on the larger John Deere C850 Cart are also included on the C650, including hydraulic rear disc brakes, in-tank camera mounts, in-tank lights, LED working lights, conveyor weather cover and digital tank air pressure monitoring.

Successful Australian demonstration

A C650 tow-behind cart, with the Liquid Systems fertiliser distribution option fitted, has been running at the 3000ha Lush family farming operation near Barabba in South Australia.

On their farm the Lush family grow wheat, canola, lentils and faba beans.

Paul Lush and his son Nicholas have seen input savings of up to 10 per cent in demonstrations of the C650 tow-behind on their farming operation near Barabba South Australia

Paul Lush said following the recent demo he was confident the C650 was well matched to his seeding requirements, with John Deere Section Control delivering appreciable cost-saving benefits.

Section Control is designed to improve placement of agricultural inputs and reduces operator fatigue by automatically turning implement sections on and off.

“We had been using the John Deere 1910 tow-behind, however this new and larger offering just suits the size of our operation, while the technology in this machine is simply fantastic,” Mr Lush said.

“Our calculations have shown us that we have reduced inputs by up to 10 per cent in some paddocks, and an average 5.5 per cent across the entire farm.

“When you add that up across seed, granular fertiliser and liquid inputs, that is a significant saving.”
