With ongoing dry to very dry conditions across livestock producing areas of the country, trailed feed mixers have rapidly become a standard piece of equipment for many operations.
It is generally accepted that simply throwing hay out to livestock is a wasteful method of feeding, with up to 40% of fodder being destroyed by trampling or fouling with manure.
In contrast NDE’s TMR mixers have the advantage of being able to produce a highly
nutritious mixed ration that is then easily fed to livestock whether they be roaming freely in the paddock or housed in a feed lot.
Additionally, with the arrival of spring, producers are now readying livestock for sale.
With this in mind, a mixed ration is a far more efficient way of encouraging both growth and weight gain in animals with the ability to mix in a wide range of ingredients such as grain and molasses and other nutritious proprietary additives.
Similarly, dairy operations can compensate for lower prices for their milk with increased production from nutritious feed.
Studies suggest a production gain of up to 5% can be made with TMR mixed rations as opposed to conventional feed.
NDE Co of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has been building TMR feed mixers for the beef and dairy industries for more than twenty years.
NDE produces vertical mixers with one to three augers and capacities ranging from 9 to 48 cubic metres.
Eastern Spreaders in Kerang Vic, has been distributing the NDE mixers locally since 2000 and carries a full range as well as a large stock of spare parts.
At the core of all vertical NDE mixers is an aggressive auger design with 60cm (2ft) curved carbide knives to quickly and completely process hay bales and roughage.
There is no need for a hay grinder when you run an NDE mixer. Depending on the material being cut, NDE knives give up to and in excess of 4000 hours cutting life.
The full flighted auger design, combined with a stepped floor ensures an even front to back and bottom to top mix, and easy and complete cleanout.
This means no residue is left behind to contaminate following feed batches.
The stepped floor in NDE mixers places the rear auger floor 250mm (10-inches) higher than the front auger floor, so product moves in a figure 8 flow pattern, ensuring complete mixing of all material.
All NDE models will accept the largest round or square bale and process it quickly, while high capacity models will hold up to six large bales as well as grain and concentrates.
Time is money and NDE mixers are designed to deliver feed fast through their large doors and a wide 1.06m (3.5ft) conveyor.
In addition, NDE mixers employ a simple design with fewer moving parts to reduce maintenance and ensure ongoing reliability.
Two popular models in the NDE line up are the FS1200D and the FS1000D.
Both mixers are twin auger designs with the augers overlapping to guarantee a complete mix of all ration ingredients.
The FS models are all-purpose mixers offering front, side or rear discharge with a wide array of conveyor options and tyre and axle configurations.
The FS1000D has a 28.4 cubic metre capacity and can be set up as pictured by Eastern Spreaders with a side elevator delivery.
On this model, feed is pushed out a 1.1m (3.6ft) side door to an elevator with available lengths of one to three metres.
Rubber wind guards can be fitted to these conveyers and they can be configured with self-levelling feed slides (steel, rubber or magnet).
Elevators can be set at any discharge height from 1m to 2.5m (3.3 to 8.2ft).
And discharge elevators on all NDE models can be set up on either the left- or right-hand side to suit customer needs.
Both the lifting and driving of elevators is controlled from the tractor remotes.
The FS1000D has a 1000rpm PTO speed and has a minimum power requirement of 97kW (130hp).
The mixer is a tandem axle design and can be set up with a walking or sprung configuration. 445/50R-22.5 tyres are fitted as standard, but flotation tyres are also available.
For producers that choose the NDE FS1200D it boosts capacity to 33.4 cubic metres and can be set up as pictured by Eastern Spreaders with front delivery, or with a side conveyor.
The front door has a large 1.4m (4.6ft) opening and can be configured with a flat two-way delivery or a 60cm or 91cm (2 to 3ft) folding dogleg conveyor.
The FS1200D has a 1000rpm PTO speed and has a minimum power requirement of 112kW (150hp).
All NDE machines are fitted with Weightronix weighing systems with bold type monitors as standard.
A number of optional features are available for these mixers, including fully programmable scale monitors and a two-speed gearbox.
