Sugarcane growers, researchers, and industry leaders from across Queensland and beyond met in Brisbane this week for Sugar Cubed 2025 – a dynamic, future-focused event hosted by Canegrowers at the Royal International Convention Centre, RNA Showgrounds.
Held from 27 to 29 April, the event centred on the theme Growth for Generations, exploring the innovations and collaborations needed to secure a sustainable, thriving future for Australia’s sugarcane industry.
The program featured keynote addresses from Australian cricket legend and McGrath Foundation President Glenn McGrath, and motivational speaker Warren Davies, known as ‘The Unbreakable Farmer’.
Attendees engaged in thought-provoking panels covering topics such as mill viability, cane varieties, diversification, cutting-edge innovation, sustainable sugar markets, and the latest ag-tech trends.
A highlight of the event was the immersive field trip on 28 April, offering hands-on experiences at leading agricultural sites:
- SRA IRIS Laboratories: Participants explored cutting-edge research in plant breeding, pathology, and DNA analysis.
- UQ Gatton Field Site: Attendees witnessed the latest in agricultural technology and research, including autonomous sprayers, drones, and advanced field trials.
- Brimblecombe Farm (Forest Hill): The visit showcased sustainable cotton farming practices under the Cotton MyBMP program.
Canegrowers CEO Dan Galligan emphasised the importance of such gathering.
“Sugar Cubed is about turning ideas into action for a stronger, smarter, and more sustainable sugarcane industry,” Mr Galligan said.
“It’s a space where growers, researchers, and industry leaders can come together, share ideas, and be inspired.”
The event also coincided with the Canegrowers triennial elections, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to grassroots democratic processes, where growers elect fellow farmers to represent their interests from the paddock to Parliament.
