Ag workers are encouraged to specifically record their occupation details in the upcoming Census to help build better understanding of our ag workforce.
Ag workers shouldn’t sell themselves short this Census, as farmers, fishers and foresters are the backbone of our rural economy, and the key to achieving the target to grow agriculture to $100 billion by 2030.
Farm workers aren’t all the same, and the Government is anxious to learn what you do and for the ag workforce to show off their experience and skills. This has never been more important that now with global pandemic focussing Government and the farming sector on the needs of the industry.
The Government is encouraging all ag workers to be specific when they record their occupation in the Census on Tuesday 10 August 2021. Better data makes for better decisions and means government and industry can respond to the needs of our agriculture workforce and community.
Population Census data provides a snapshot of us as a nation and changes over time. It helps government decision-making processes and policy.

Census data collection
· Data on occupation will help the Government make key decisions around regional grants, funding and support.
· The Population Census on 10 August 2021 is complemented by the current ABS Agriculture Census
· The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment is currently working with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to update the agriculture sector occupations in the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).
· Experimental counts from the 2021 Census based on the new version of ANZSCO will be available alongside counts using the existing version in late 2022. This dual reporting of Census data is expected to provide governments and industry with insights into the sector’s workforce.
