The launch of Volvo’s zero-emission construction equipment in CJD’s 50th year of operation highlights a commitment to sustainability

In 2024, CJD Equipment, a proudly Western Australian, privately owned organisation, celebrated its 50th year in operation.
Founded in 1974 by Ron Rafferty and Rob Jowett, CJD Equipment has evolved from humble beginnings into a national leader in distributing construction equipment and trucks across various sectors.
The founders first met as sales cadets at Chamberlain Industries, where they established CJD Equipment with a commitment to customer service and excellence.
These core values have been pivotal in driving the company’s growth to 600 employees and $1 billion in sales revenue by late 2023.
CJD Equipment’s journey began with its affiliation with Chamberlain Industries, later known as Chamberlain John Deere.

When the latter liquidated its Australian dealerships in 1973, Rafferty and Jowett seized the opportunity to acquire the WA dealership, marking the start of their new venture.
In its inaugural year, the company recorded a modest turnover of $4.5 million (in 2023 dollars) with just 28 employees. The enduring partnership and friendship between the founders, spanning over 60 years, have been crucial to CJD’s success.
In 2008, leadership transitioned to Managing Director Alan Barnett, Rob’s son-in-law. Under his guidance, the company has expanded its brand portfolio and strengthened its market position.
CJD Equipment has focused on premium brands, partnering with world-class manufacturers such as Volvo Construction Equipment, SDLG, Kenworth, DAF Trucks, Isuzu, and Fuso.
The extensive network of dealers and service centres across Australia underscores the company’s commitment to customer service. This nationwide presence enables efficient servicing and maintenance of customers’ equipment and trucks.

Despite significant growth, CJD Equipment maintains a family-oriented approach, valuing long-term employees and prioritising their well-being.
This commitment has fostered lasting connections with customers, manufacturers, and former employees, embodying the ethos of being “Big Enough to Trust, Small Enough to Care”.
Throughout its history, CJD Equipment has faced various challenges, including franchise withdrawals and economic volatility. However, these obstacles have only strengthened the company’s resolve and driven its continued development.
in its 50th anniversary celebration year, CJD Equipment remains focused on expansion and innovation. The launch of Volvo’s zero-emission construction equipment in Australia highlights its commitment to sustainability.
From modest beginnings to a national powerhouse, CJD Equipment’s story is a testament to its founders’ vision and dedication.

As it looks ahead into 2025 and beyond, the company is poised for greater success while shaping the future of the industry through innovation and exceptional customer service.
