Cry of the Koala bush ballad is about saving a species

Singer songwriter Andy Penkow has turned his attention to saving more Koalas and stabilising their existence in conjunction with the Australian Koala Foundation

A Koala is one of our most iconic images and it draws many tourists and locals alike into its fold but not everyone realises it is a diminishing breed and assistance is needed

Four-time CMAA Golden Guitar nominee Andy Penkow has dedicated his powerful single, Cry of the Koala, in honour of saving Koala’s in a heartfelt tribute to one of our most beloved yet endangered native animals. The track aims to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect Koala’s dwindling habitat.

As a proud Brand Ambassador for the Australian Koala Foundation, Andy hopes the song will inspire action. “I absolutely love nature and animals,” Andy shares.

“When the Australian Koala Foundation approached me to become their Brand Ambassador three years ago, I didn’t hesitate. What many people don’t realise is that the Koala is disappearing fast, with around 80% of its natural habitat already destroyed due to deforestation. Koalas have no voice—so we need to be their voice and fight for their rights.”

Co-written with fellow Golden Guitar nominees Kath Stewart and Rip-Van ParksCry of the Koala was born from a shared passion for storytelling and conservation. “I had the privilege of working with Kath and Rip-Van on The Lone Drover last year and loved the creative process,” Andy explains. “This time, we wanted to create something truly special for the Australian Koala Foundation.”

Produced by the acclaimed Steve Newton at ENREC Studios, Cry of the Koala is a beautifully crafted bush ballad that blends tradition with a contemporary edge. Listeners will hear clear influences of legendary Australian country icons Slim Dusty, John Williamson, and Allan Caswell, while the track’s heartfelt lyrics and sweeping melodies carry a message of hope and urgency.

Further protection for Koala habitats is more urgent than most are aware

Deborah Tabart OAM, Chair of the Australian Koala Foundation, shared her delight of the song release.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Andy has written this beautiful song for the Koalas. His passion for wildlife and his unwavering support for the Australian Koala Foundation mean the world to us. Cry of the Koala is more than just a song—it’s a powerful message about the plight of the Koala and the urgent need to protect their habitat. Andy’s voice gives strength to the Koalas’ cry, and we could not be more grateful.”

The Australian Koala Foundation continues its vital work in long-term conservation and the effective management of wild Koalas across the country. Penkow’s moving tribute serves as both a rallying cry and a celebration of one of Australia’s most iconic species.
