The Dumac Ruffy and Filter-cut vertical column pump are now readily available from new distributor W&P Pumps

Since W&P Pumps has taken over the manufacturing and distribution of Dumac pumps it has increased the services the company is able to offer to more farming industries.
And while the Dumac name is already well known to operators in food processing, abattoirs, wineries, piggeries and dairies, it is the added services W&P has been able to offer with its full lines of pumping and irrigation products that are making the difference.
In particular, Dumac is the first choice for groundwater control and for agricultural effluent management for piggeries and dairies.
Farmers often need specialist advice as the build-up of solids or sludge in an effluent system can be problematic as it can reduce the storage volume in single-pond systems and increase the transfer of solids into the second pond or storage ponds in multiple-pond systems.

On most farms, there are systems in place to manage the liquid effluent fraction, often through dedicated or existing irrigation infrastructure. However, solids are typically more difficult to manage and usually require the farmer to engage a contractor with specialist equipment.
This is where W&P Pumps can step in with a system design where the farmer can often take over the ongoing management with increased productivity, reductions in fresh water, electricity and fertiliser use, and a decreased risk of breaching Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.
The more farmers understand what’s going on with their effluent ponds and how transferring content to the soil to achieve better pastures and healthier stock can introduce big cost savings.
Dairy farms in particular can now be set up to be self-sustainable and cut down on buying phosphate and fertilisers as there is often several thousands of dollars’ worth of fertiliser in the effluent pond, ready to be used.
For many farmers, even after just one year of foliar spraying the pasture this way, they notice much improved soil mineral balance and soil biology.
With the advantage of the W&P Pump team as a backup, farmers also have access to design an on-farm supply system to reduce reliance on town water for washing down the dairy, in the yards and for stock water.
Dumac Filter-cut and Ruffy
Dumac first released electric motor and vertical-column pumps in 1964 and has become the most experienced and proficient in manufacturing high-quality of pumps.
Today, there is a dynamic and skilled team producing 100% Australian-owned and manufactured pumps to meet customer requirements.
Care is given to ensure the materials used in the build are of the highest standard, to ensure the quality and longevity of each pump.
The Dumac Filter-Cut is the original vertical-column waste-disposal pump to be designed and manufactured in Australia and still stands the test of time.
The Filter-Cut is available in 40mm (1-5-inch) and 50mm (2-inch) BSP outlets with a range of column lengths and motor sizes to provide a true cutting action and agitation of the liquids it pumps.
The true cutting action is provided by hardened steel, replaceable tips that guillotine against a perforated, hardened steel plate fitted over the suction inlet. And includes the original hardened steel agitator blade fixed to the impeller nut, providing continuous agitation.
There are two Filter-Cut models available, the A Model was first released in 1972, with pressurised oil lubrication of a fully self-contained, sealed chamber.
The seals and lower bearing on the A Model are located on a stainless-steel shaft sleeve and pressure is supplied by an external oil feed pipe that extends to the lubricator above the liquid level at the top of the pump.
Then there is the W Model that employs a water-lubricated lower sleeve just like the original Dumac Filter-Cutdesign.
The W Model is of simple construction with all the key functions of the standard Filter-Cut, including agitation and a true cutting action.

Also well known in the Dumac range is the Ruffy vertical column pump, ideal for multiple industries including mine dewatering and groundwater control, industrial waste disposal, and agricultural effluent management for piggeries and dairies.
All Ruffy pumps are fitted with a cast iron impeller and can handle difficult solids, stones, glass, sand and wood chips. They are designed not to have bearings or seals below the liquid level.
Dumac Ruffy models offer direct coupling or belt-driven power, with a range of pump column lengths from .76 to 1.82m (2.5 to 6ft) and motor options to suit a range of pumping applications.
Direct coupling motors come in 2.2 or 3kW motor capacities, while belt-driven models come in 4 or 5kW motor capacities
The CNC machined 4140 steel impellers built into the Ruffy have a deep, open vane design capable of pumping large and abrasive solids in suspension.
The high-tensile shaft steel, K1040 or 1045, is 38mm (1.5-inch) in diameter and trued to ~0.1 mm (0.005-inch), end to end. Heavy-duty ball bearings in all models are part of the rugged design.
With the Ruffy design, there is no need to screen the liquids, and no priming requirements as the pump casing is always submerged and there are no lower bearings
The design also eliminates suction hoses or extension pipes as the pump casing is where all the work occurs. Also, there’s a standard 50mm (2-inch) discharge outlet on all Ruffy models.
A Ruffy standard mount is ideal for pit depths of 0.76 to 1.06m (2.5 to 3.5ft) with SR, BR and CR models available.
While a Ruffy long standard mount is more suitable for deeper pits over 1.5m (4.9ft). And includes models with shaft depths of, the MR at 1.2m (4ft), the LR 1.5m (5ft) and the XLR 1.82m (6ft).
All Ruffy long standard mount models are built with a hardened steel shaft sleeve and guide. With two large bearings in the housing, with grease nipples.
W&P Pumps took over the Dumac manufacturing and retail operation in 2022 and added the strength of its existing Pump manufacturing and Irrigation design that has been in operation since 1986.

History of Dumac brand
Dumac originally started in 1948 as an engineering company, after a request from a friend of the owner it produced its first uniquely designed effluent pump in 1964 called the Filter-Cut.
About a year later it was the first Australian company to produce a vertical column waste pump and evolved to what is made today, still with the original functions that made it popular.
In September 1974 it released the “Ruffy” pump, a rugged pump that has applications ranging from primary production to small mining operations. The only physical changes made since then were in the first two years.
Both pumps are engineered not fabricated and are simple to operate as they only require two spanners and an Allen key for assembly and maybe a puller for dismantling.
