Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB double small square baler halves work rate

Hay producers facing tight harvest windows can double their output with this small square baler from Massey Ferguson

Massey Ferguson has launched the SB.1436DB small square baler into northern hemisphere hay markets with the claim of doubling the output of a single baler by producing two rows of bales each pass

Released this week in the US, plenty of horse enthusiasts and specialist livestock owners would like to get their hands on bale feed produced by a Massey Ferguson SB.1436 DB small square baler.

Packed with the most current baling technology such as SimplEbale, the MF SB.1436 DB small square baler is designed to ensure high bale consistency together with industry-leading uptime, as it allows operators to deliver double the output in every pass.

Built for high-output commercial hay producers to provide feed for horses and specialist livestock producers, the SB.1436 DB small square baler can halve harvest time due to its dual output in each row run.

The MF SB.1436DB small square baler is designed to produce a 355mm x 457mm (14 x 18-inch) bale size.

US farmers already have the advantage of ordering a Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB double baler following its showing at trade exhibitions during February 2025

With a 266cm (105-inch) pickup width, it operates at 90 strokes/minute and is designed to run off of a tractor with a 1,000rpm pto power of at least a 88kW (120hp) with a minimum weight of 4990kg.

The engineering behind the MF SB.1436DB is unique as it works by conveying hay through a single 355mm x 914mm (14 x 36-inch) chamber from where the compressed hay is split by a knife to create two individual 355mm x 457mm (14 x 18-inch) bales.

The next step of the process then sees it pass through a common density system that ensures consistent compression. Independent knotter trips on either side of the baling chamber allow for precise bale lengths to be preset between 61 to 132cm (24 and 52 inches).

From there, two complete bales are dropped through the bale chute into independent rows.

The Massey Ferguson SB.1436DB small square baler carries the latest baling technology and is expected to help hay producers gain further markets with horse enthusiasts and specialist livestock producers due to the unique bale size

Paddock performance

Primarily, Massey Ferguson’s SB.1436DB is designed to help hay producers meet tight harvest windows with the advantage of minimal cost and maximum productivity.

Adding to the increased production claim, these are the benefits that most producers will appreciate:

Adding to this claim

  • The MF SB.1436DB can produce two rows of bales from a single pass with the aim of reducing labour, equipment and fuel costs.
  • A 266cm (105-inch) pickup width leads to greater throughput and capacity.
  • It operates at 90 strokes per minute with a 55cm (21.9-inch) stroke length for efficient performance.
  • Automated bale density, weight and dimensions are achieved with the SimplEbale system – for more consistent results by eliminating productivity losses caused by manual errors.
Massey Ferguson’s SB.1436DB small square baler is seen as a revolutionary design able to deliver greater paddock performance and superior bale consistency in a finished size of 355mm x 457mm (14 x 18-inch) that stacks easily and retains the nutritional value

Factored in is bale consistency

The Massey Ferguson’s SB.1436DB delivers bales with uniform density, shape and in a size that Massey Ferguson engineers claim sets a new benchmark standard for small bale hay marketability.

  • Produces dense, well-formed 355mm x 457mm (14 x 18-inch) bales that stack easily and retain nutritional value.
  • Independent knotter trips ensure precise bale lengths 61 to 132cm (24 to 52 inches) regardless of windrow variability.
  • Completed bales are dropped into independent rows for easier handling and transport.

Upscaling the work in each pass

The SB.1436DB is engineered to keep operators running for longer.

  • Twine storage holds 20 balls, producing up to 8,000 bales before refilling — double the capacity of comparable balers.
  • Automated knotter lubrication minimises manual intervention, increasing the paddock time.
  • Built for reliability under demanding conditions, with quick and easy service access to critical components.

Engineered to achieve the most output

For more than 75 years, Massey Ferguson has been a trusted name in hay making equipment, with engineering in many instances that has pioneered industry production standards. The SB.1436DB continues this legacy.
