Sheep exports to Saudi Arabia back on the menu

A new pathway has now been established to export more sheep to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Exporters are looking to build on the $2.040 billion for the financial year 2019-20 earned from exporting Australian livestock

For sheep exporters anxious to offer stock to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment says it has finalised the operational requirements for meeting the conditions for livestock exports.

The conditions behind exports to KSA, including the basis of a certification came together after a long process of extensive consultation with industry bodies.

The department has been working closely with their counterparts in the Kingdom of Saudi

Arabia to ensure that these new arrangements meet Saudi Arabia’s requirements and

ensure the health and welfare of the exported animals.

As with all livestock exports, applicants must hold a valid licence and have arrangements in place to ensure animal health and welfare requirements are met during preparation and transport.

For feeder and slaughter livestock, these animal welfare obligations extend through to the

point of slaughter in the importing country.

Exporters can apply to the department to have the required arrangements approved for

the export of livestock to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

These exports will be an ongoing and the department will continue to work with the livestock export industry to implement new arrangements whenever required to ensure smooth trade with this important trading partners.

A new Export Advisory Notice (2021-05) has been published on the Department’s website

outlining the finalised requirements.
