John Deere unleashes 500R compact SP sprayer

John Deere 500R self-propelled sprayers offer budget conscious operations everything they need in a compact design

John Deere 500R sprayers combine a front-mounted cab and rear-engine layout with current application technology, automated boom control and hydraulic tread adjustment

John Deere is introducing the 500R Series of self-propelled sprayer for the first time here to provide budget aware grain growers with everything they need for precise application while paying attention to operator comfort.

Available locally with a Model Year 2027 build, there are three sprayers in the 500R Series,

the 540R and 550R with 4000 and 5000-litre product capacity respectively, and the flagship 560R with a 6000-litre tank capacity.

Deere has aimed these models squarely at farm operations that will benefit from a narrow profile and 2.55-metre transport width, allowing operators to move efficiently between jobs.

Engineers have achieved this compact package by combining a front-mounted cab and rear-engine layout but have still incorporated the full suite of John Deere application technology that incorporates automated boom control and hydraulic tread adjustment.

Operators of John Deere’s 500R Series SP sprayers will be treated to a fully pressurised category-4 cab with uninterrupted vision aided by floor-to-ceiling glass and a large G5 Plus CommandCenter display close by

And while the final engine spec is still to be confirmed, the standard factory drivetrain for the 500R’s includes a John Deere PowerTech™ PSS 6.8L 6-cylinder engine delivering 210kW (285hp) with a highly responsive CommandDrive™ transmission.

This powerful combination achieves paddock spraying speeds up to 30kph and propels unladen models to road speeds up to 40 or 50kph running at just 1350 RPM.

Modular steel booms are available up to 42 metres wide with double- or triple-folding configurations of 30m, 36m and 42m, fitted with 25cm or 50cm nozzle spacing options, and individual Nozzle Control and ExactApply available.

Operators are treated to a fully pressurised cab and Category-4 filtration with floor-to-ceiling glass. Everything is controlled from a swivel seat within easy reach of a G5 Plus CommandCenter display, CommandArm/joystick controls, and a front-mounted design that offers clear visibility of the boom.

The compact design and adjustable tread widths allow the 500R sprayer to work across all types of crops and applications, especially useful where narrower row spacings are required.

Visibility from the 500R cab to the boom has been maximised to provide operators with a clear view of their working environment for safer and more efficient spraying

Take a closer look at 500R sprayers

John Deere Australia and New Zealand Production and Precision Ag Marketing Manager Royce Bell outlined how 500R sprayers would broaden options available for growers.

“The 500R has been designed with the application needs of various growers in mind, combining precise boom control and spray application with clear visibility, operator comfort and strong transport performance,” Royce Bell confirmed.

“Hydraulic tread adjustment options of 1.8 to 2.5 metres and 2.0 to 2.7 metres also give operators the flexibility to use the machine in other crops and applications with narrower row spacings.”

The first 500R Series sprayers will be available in our local market in 2027 will be available with newly designed modular steel booms in 30-, 36- and 42-metre widths. With double- or triple-folding configurations and 25 or 50-centimetre nozzle spacing.

Maximum spraying speed is 30 kilometres/hour, helping operators cover plenty of ground during tight application windows while maintaining application quality.

Enhanced boom stability and alignment

BoomTrac™ Pro 2 uses five ultrasonic sensors on boom widths below 36 metres and seven on widths of 36 metres and above. This helps the boom follow any ground or crop contours and maintain a consistent spray height.

The newly designed centre frame also provides active boom yaw and roll control to counteract chassis movement and slope effects, supporting application accuracy and reduces operator workload.

Advanced drivetrain for more efficiency

The CommandDrive™ variable speed hydrostatic transmission on the 500R efficiently works a single hydrostatic pump that powers four variable wheel motors, each connected to a heavy-duty planetary final drive hub.

This configuration ensures ultimate pulling power at each wheel and delivers superior traction control.

The independent wheel motors automatically adjust power based on weight distribution and wheel speed, optimising stability and grip in all conditions.

For road travel, the 500R’s Auto Mode reduces engine speed to 1,350-RPM, significantly reducing fuel consumption and noise levels for a more economical and comfortable ride.

Operators will appreciate the drivetrain power with CommandDrive variable-speed hydrostatic 4WD with an Auto Mode that drops road transport engine speeds to 1350 RPM for speeds of 40 to 50kph

Precision application technology

PowrSpray™, ExactApply™ and BoomTrac Pro 2 work together to support precise application.

PowrSpray uses a dual-circuit pump system, while ExactApply provides individual nozzle management and pulse width modulation to maintain consistent droplet size across a wide range of ground speeds.

Automatic turn compensation supports consistent application on curved tracks, and for MY2027 machines the system can apply up to 15 different rates across the boom width, increasing resolution for prescription applications.

PowrSpray™ offers clean-water filling at up to 1,200-litres/minute. A simplified interface available inside and outside the cab supports automated rinsing, while AirRinse™ and AutoDilute functions help minimise residue, reduce contamination risk and prepare the sprayer for its next application.

Designed around operator needs

Visibility from the 500R cab to the boom has been maximised to provide operators with a clear view of their working environment for safer and more efficient spraying.

The G5Plus CommandCenter™ hosts a larger screen, with fast performance and high-definition 1080P resolution with a familiar maps-like satellite view.

A corner post display provides essential information at a glance, while the new CommandArm groups buttons by functionality, including engine, transport and chassis, and lights, for intuitive operation.

The ergonomic multifunction joystick allows operators to control speed and park brake with a simple push or pull, while executing essential spraying functions through intuitively placed buttons.

With a 30kph top working speed in the paddock and the benefit of a compact 2.55m transport width John Deere 500R Series sprayers will broaden sprayer options available to local growers

Comfort and connectivity in the cab

The fully pressurised cab with Category-4 filtration comes with ample storage options, including armrest compartments for keys and smartphones, dedicated cup holders, and behind-seat storage for larger items.

Premium infotainment functions are included in the cab such as Bluetooth® connectivity, pristine sound quality, while seamless smartphone integration allows operators to make calls, handle messages, access music, and use voice commands effortlessly in comfort.
