Netting protection funding of $1.5 million for Queensland apple and pear growers

Queensland apple and pear growers will be able to access $1.5 million in grants to purchase protective netting.

There has been a significant barrier for many horticulturalists to accessing protective netting, even though it can significantly reduce the impact of weather events and pests.

This 1.5 million funding for grants will allow apple and pear growers to access 50% of the cost of purchasing and installing protective netting, up to $150,000.

Minister Furner said that the funding was a welcome investment in Queensland’s horticulture industry.

“Around 10% of Australia’s apples are produced in Queensland, and the state is home to a diverse horticultural industry,” Minister Furner said.

“This funding recognises the importance of horticulture to Queensland’s broader agricultural industry.

“I look forward to working with the Australian Government and hope we can continue to work together to deliver positive outcomes for Queensland.”

The scheme runs from 24 May 2021 and will operate until 30 June 2023 or until funds are fully committed.

For more information visit daf.qld.gov.au or phone 13 25 23.  Applications will be assessed strictly in order of receipt from 24 May 2021. As Queensland only produces 10% of apples for instance, watch out for growers in other states producing 90% of the crop seeking assistance as well.
