Leading agricultural equipment manufacturer, Bourgault has positioned its latest innovation in precision seeding, the Bourgault 4420 Deep Knife Drill™ for growers operating across all types of ground in local conditions.
Built for local farms following 18 months of assessment, this groundbreaking implement enables growers to experience the precision and efficiency they have been asking for, with more adaptability in their seeding operation.
Developed in partnership with Australian farmers, the Bourgault 4420 DKD™ is tailored to meet the demands of local agricultural conditions, resulting in a robust and reliable tool that stands up to real-time challenges.
Hosted in an all-new frame design, the Bourgault 4420 DKD™ is available in sowing widths of 12 and 18m (39.3 and 59ft), in 3 and 5-plex sections to offer more diverse planting choices.
With row spacings of 250mm and 300mm, growers can gain unparalleled flexibility in crop management.
The 4420 DKD™ is the first model to carry the next-generation frame along with an all-new opener. Within the design is an independent fertiliser knife that’s optimised for depths of 120 to 165mm. While the seed closer parallel to the packing wheel also offers improved seed placement and germination.
The large Hi-Flotation™ tyres, steerable front axle, and floating hitch ensure optimal depth control, perfect tracking, and minimised soil compaction.
The unique dual-tine DK™ (Deep Knife) opener penetrates the soil to greater depths, improving fertiliser separation and seed placement for optimal seed germination and growth.
With the release of the 4420 DKD™ growers also get enhanced control by using the on-the-go adjustable hydraulic breakout. It offers a force range of 68 to 450kg.
This dynamic function allows for more surety when encountering varying soil conditions, resulting in consistent seed depth placement and uniform crop emergence.
Third-generation farmer Frank Varone, Director of Roma Farming Company, a 12140ha (30,000-acre) mixed crop and lambing operation in the WA Wheatbelt assisted with in-paddock testing in 2023.
Frank was so impressed with the performance of the 4420 DKD™ he went ahead and purchased the seed drill for the 2024 season.
“With the 4420, it almost doesn’t matter what the tines are doing,” Frank explains. “The seed placement is always precise and the germination very even.
“Because it has good flotation, it’s very even and accurate across the whole bar.”
Another key benefit of the 4420 is that it folds to a 5.5m transport width, and that applies to both the 12 and 18m models.
“The narrow transport width is good. It’s very compact and travels nicely down the road or through gates,” Frank adds.
