Munro Engineers follows a family tradition of manufacturing for farmers

Local manufacturer Munro Engineers produced the world’s first auger-driven complete post-hole driver in 1964 and has led the market ever since

Starting in 1867, leading manufacturer Munro Engineers followed the farming trends as the company moved from tobacco presses, chaff cutters and conveyors into leading suppliers of Post Drivers and Wire Winders.

Munro first launched their now revolutionary post-driver in 1964.

In the five decades since the Victorian company has sold thousands of its posthole drivers in Australia and across the world.

Company owner Warren McLean said the original Munro posthole driver was manufactured after a bet between two farmers about who could make the best posthole driver.

When the Munro AutoDriver was introduced some operators were able to double the number of posts they could install in an hour

“The farmer who won the bet, Alastair Mackenzie, and his friend Max Brooke, a hydraulics engineer, approached my father Max McLean,” Warwick explained.

“Munro Engineers finished the design and manufactured the first model in 1964.

“It was the first machine in the world that combined an auger and a driver for installing posts.”

The popularity of the new posthole driver which revolutionised the art of fencing prompted Munro Engineers to specialise in fencing products.

“Our service and spare parts are second to none,” Warwick McLean added. “We really look after our customers, many of whom are repeat buyers.”

“The feedback from customers is always positive and relates to how long the machine lasts, how well it’s made and how well it does the job that it’s designed to do.

“Single-person fencing contractors that have swapped to the latest release AutoDriver say it’s increased their productivity, with some doubling the number of posts they are able to install in an hour,” Warwick added.

The recently introduced WireWinder is another great product manufactured by Munro.

Allowing users to coil 500 metres of fencing in under a minute the WireWinder is proving popular with both contractors and farmers.

A 120ha (300-acre) dairy farm with a lane system was wound up in just over 2 days. A job that would take almost three weeks by hand.

For livestock producers involved in strip grazing Munro now manufacture the FenceBoss temporary electric fence system.

This system is designed to make setting up and pulling down temporary electric fencing quicker, easier and safer. It prevents loss and damage to reels and pegs while it also makes transporting the system a breeze.

Special adaption for Morooka

While most often seen working with a tractor, the Munro AutoDriver can be adapted to work with any farm vehicle including a track model such as the Morooka.

“Our engineering team developed mechanical and hydraulic adaptions of the Morooka vehicle to accommodate the Munro AutoDriver to provide an ideal solution which is now being offered to fencing contractors throughout Australia and overseas,” said Warren McLean of Munro Engineers.

“The Munro AutoDriver is widely favoured by fencing contractors, vineyard operators and government departments. Capable of installing posts up to 3,352mm in length, the AutoDriver offers a fast-action hydraulic earth auger for drilling a pilot hole, combined with a powerful and efficient rock-breaker style hammer post driver.

“Most post drivers comprise a tractor, generally with a front-end loader, with the fence post machine located on a side-shift on the rear linkage of the tractor.

The entire setup consumes seven metres or more in length, depending on the machine being used. As well as the length of the tractor-based system, operators need to take several steps up and down with each post insertion, which can become slow and very tiring during a full day’s work.

“The same equipment mounted on the Morooka, even with the added blade and foldable post rack, results in a length of between four and five metres, which is a huge reduction in the deck length on a truck. This means the contractor can also carry more gear or allows a smaller truck to be used.
