Munro launched their revolutionary post-driver in 1964 and has led the market ever since
While Munro is celebrating 60 years of its revolutionary Post Driver, first launched in 1964, the company actually started the family business in 1867.
Munro Engineers was a leading manufacturer for farmers who were venturing further away from the main regional towns in 1867, by supplying tobacco presses, chaff cutters and conveyors. PostDrivers and WireWinders came much later.
Munro first launched their revolutionary Post Drivers in 1964 to become the number one supplier due to a design that was offered for the first time back then and has since stood the test of time..
In the six decades since the Victorian-based manufacturer from Ballarat has sold thousands of its posthole drivers in Australia and across the world.
Current company owner Warren McLean said the original Munro posthole driver was manufactured after a bet between two farmers, it was about who could make the best posthole driver.
“The farmer who won the bet, Alastair Mackenzie, and his friend Max Brooke, a hydraulics engineer, approached my father Max McLean,” as Warren McLean outlines the sequence of events.
“We finished the design and manufactured the first model in 1964. It was the first post driver in the world that combined an auger and a driver for setting posts into the ground quickly and efficiently by just one operator.
The popularity of the Munro posthole driver which revolutionised the art of fencing prompted Munro Engineers to specialise in fencing products from that time on.
“Our service and spare parts are second to none,” Warren McLean continues. “We really look after our customers, many of whom are repeat buyers.
“The feedback from customers is about how long the Munro posthole driver lasts, how well it’s made and how well it does the job that it’s designed to do.
“In more recent years, single operator fencing contractors who have swapped to updated models such as the AutoDriver say it’s increased their productivity, with some doubling the number of posts they can install in an hour,” Warren proudly adds.

The recently introduced WireWinder is another great product manufactured by Munro. It allows users to coil 500 metres of fencing in under a minute and as a result has proven popular with both contractors and farmers.
There are many practical examples of how the WireWinder has saved farmers time and reduced operator stress considerably.
One example Warren likes to relate is the 121ha (300-acre) dairy farm with a lane system that was wound up in just over two days. This would take almost three weeks by hand before the WireWinder became available.

Munro Engineers have been leading the introduction of new model lines to cut back on labour costs. Another product the company manufactures is the FenceBoss temporary electric fence system. This quick to erect system has proved a big time saver for farmers involved in strip grazing.
This FenceBoss system is designed to make setting up and pulling down temporary electric fencing quicker, easier and safer. It prevents loss and damage to reels and pegs while transporting them anywhere is simple and easy.
