NOKIAN releases INTUITU smart tyres for farmers

The next big milestone in farm vehicle tyres is now available and what started out as a digital journey out of Finland is now reaching every corner of the globe

All the smart implements available won’t do you much good if the tyres themselves are anything less than first rate. This is why Nokian Tyres Intuitu is now available in four flagship Nokian Tyres tractor tyre ranges – Nokian Ground King, Nokian TRI 2, Nokian Hakkapeliitta TRI and Nokian Tractor King

When Nokian Tyres released its smart tyre solution, Intuitu, the industry immediately praised the range for its plug-and-play simplicity.

Intuitu tyres are sensor-equipped and is part of the move to a smart tyre range that is expected to lead sales in the agricultural tyre market within the next two years.

All buyers will expect to fit sensor-equipped smart tyres that convey information to an app on a smartphone. From there it will relay your tyre pressure, confirm wear and provide general performance and temperature data on any attention your tyres may require.

“Fleet managers, in particular, we’re excited about the prospect of having vital tyre information and alarms available with a minimal need for configuration,” says Matthew Crocker, Product Manager at Nokian Tyres.

“Premium tractor tyres are an investment you want to look after,” Matthew added.

The digital transformation of tractor tyres will make a huge difference for everyday farm vehicle operators and will fill in the gaps in farm fleet management.

Initially, Intuitu tyres will be available for selected agricultural and contracting tractor tyres, with sales already underway in Finland.

According to Matthew Crocker product manager at Nokian Tyres the Nokian Tyres Intuitu smart tyre range will change the work habits of tractor and farm machinery operators

Digital tyre advantage

In its current phase, Nokian Tyres Intuitu consists of sensor-equipped smart tyres and a mobile application.

All you have to do is order the smart tyres, fit them and download the app to get going.

The smart tyres are accessed in the Intuitu application on your mobile, where it shows the tyre position and pressure as well as important running temperature data for all the farm vehicles running smart tyres.

In the app, the farm fleet manager can watch over and relay messages to as many operators and vehicles as needed.

This means every operator can be kept up-to-date and get alerts on the current state of their tyres. And it also allows the fleet manager to look at the big picture and get the most out of every tyres and piece of machinery covered by the app.

In addition, the industry and tyre manufacturers will benefit from this plug-and-play smart tyre solution for the increased customer commitment it brings. What’s more, the Intuitu plug-and-play registration also extends the tyre warranty.

“Knowing how your tyres are doing helps you save on fuel costs and improves working safety,” says Matthew Crocker from Nokian.

“And the digital dimension of the tyres has the potential to be much more, and we have many great ideas in the pipeline,” Matthew added.

Intuitu at work

The Intuitu smart tyre solution has been comprehensively tested and has already become an important part of the test users daily work.

Finnish property maintenance contractor Jari Suontausta has been using Intuitu in his fleet of three tractors. And as a result, his way of working has been changed forever with the introduction of these digital dimension tyres.

“Nokian Tyres Intuitu both makes the tracking of the tyre condition easier, and provides financial savings,” Jari Suontausta said, “Mornings are effortless now that I can check that everything is okay with just one look at my phone.”

Jari Suontausta is also impressed by how Nokian Tyres Intuitu has helped him to react quickly if there is a problem with a tyre. “There are sometimes a lot of nails and metal pieces at work sites, which is why tyre punctures aren’t uncommon.

“Tears are easy and inexpensive to fix if they are spotted early, but a very expensive tyre can be ruined if the problem isn’t noticed in time,” Jari explains.

Available now ready for the future

Nokian Tyres Intuitu smart tyre sales have started out gradually, first in Finland with the four flagship Nokian Tyres tractor tyres Nokian Ground King, Nokian TRI 2, Nokian Hakkapeliitta TRI and Nokian Tractor King.

The factory is now shipping orders to select world markets, and the Intuitu mobile app will be available for download at the same time.

Ordering will take place through the Nokian tyre dealer chain in the first phase, and other dealers will follow. Once ordered, Intuitu tyres are delivered within the normal delivery time.

“Finland is our home turf and customers are eager to try out new technologies”, says Manu Salmi, SVP, Managing Director at Nokian Heavy Tyres. “And we have a roadmap for expanding the availability to other countries as well.”

Manu Salmi is notably excited about entering to a whole new digital world. “After years of testing and development, it is a great feeling to make these work-changing digital possibilities available for our users.

“Our aim is to add peace of mind by making work safer, more efficient and sustainable, and Intuitu does just that,” Manu Salmi added.

While the current Intuitu functions will already change the way tyres are used, there is more to come.

For example, tread depth measurement and integrating Nokian Tyres Intuitu with the machine’s own operating software are in development.

“This is a big milestone, maybe the biggest, but the development work continues as we speak,” Manu Salmi states, “We are just scratching the surface of the digital realm, and our ambition will not let us stop there.”
